 3 Core functions of public health

Public health is a field of prevention of disease, promotion of health and prolonging life through the organized efforts of community.

It works on masses (At large level) not merely on an individual and saves lives of population as a whole.

Public health has 3 core functions which helps the public health to pull off their goals (to prevent disease, promote health and prolong life)

According to CDC following are the 3 core functions of public health

  1. Assessment
  2. Policy development
  3. Assurance
These functions work in a synchronisation to achieve the public health goals









3 core functions explained

Assessment

This is the first core function of public health which mainly focuses on the current status on the community. In this step public health professionals get into the process of collection of data regarding health status (Morbidity rate, any outbreak etc) and do analysis of that data to find out the problem of that perticular community.

According to CDC Assignment involves followings

  • Monitor health
  • Diagnose and investigate


Policy development

The data we got from the previous step of assessment about that we inform the various stakeholders and ensure community participation and mobilization to consult the problem of the community and available interventions to tackle those problems with these stakeholders that will be affected with the policy. According to the CDC Policy development includes followings

  • Inform, educate, and empower
  • Mobilize community partnerships
  • Develop policies


Assurance

This stage can be considered as as implementation stage. In this stage implement the policy with the legal frame and make sure the availability of health services to everyone. I this step we link the competent health providers to the general public or community. This step also includes evaluation and research which help the program to become better over the time. According to CDC, assurance includes the followings

  • Enforce laws and regulations

  • Link to/provide care

  • Assure a competent workforce
  • Evaluation of policy developed

  • Research for new ideas and advancement


Conclusion

If we see the importance of these 3 core functions of public health so we can conclude that these are the roadmap for achieving public health goals and objectives. It gives the steps wise direction towards the vision and mission of the public health.
